What does Knowledge Look Like?

Can someone please tell me what knowledge looks like? I have always wondered how some people can look at me and rule me out as someone, who, by a slim chance could know something about something. It is a skill I would like to master too, so I, too can look at someone and make an informed decision on whether to ask them for help about particular subject matter or not.
